- I made sure to time it so that the fog is between the two ridges to show depth. Otherwise it would just look like one black rock!
- The waves were crashing below. I show them on my blog but it was too foggy at this moment.
- The sunset district, glowing under a low blanket of fog!
- The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. 105 million cars pass over it each year!
- The fog was right at bridge deck level, 300 feet above the ocean. Official deck clearance at mid-span, 220 feet. Just perfect for that orange glow!
- You want some blue in the sky to show of the orange tower. Too little light and the bridge lights are too harsh.
- Rarely are there really clouds in the sky while there is fog below, so I was happy about this! It was in the forecast too.
- Yes, I had to go to the very edge of the cliff for this open view. Be careful here, especially in the dark!!!
- the detail in here is amazing - sdosick
- Love this fog .. wow amazing colours ! - kamran baig
Fog at the Golden Gate #1 - San Francisco
The fog settled on the bridge deck just before sunrise! No HDR. See my Flickr profile profile page (link below) for my blog entry on the events of the morning and how I did this. I have more Hawaii photos but I'll show them later.

The Story
----------------------------------------------------------------------
------------
September and October are great months for capturing low fog at the Golden Gate. The inversion is weaker but still there and the fog is often not as deep. So I got up at 2 hours before sunrise, checked the weather and headed out. You need to get here before sunrise to capture the best light. As I left the hillside after sunrise, a bunch of other photographer were setting up their tripods but the light was already harsh and bright because the high clouds were thin. Too bad I was alone to see this!
I have lots more information about this sunrise on my blog including some extra pictures, so stop on by and have a look! See the link above to go to my Flickr profile and then my Blog.
The map shows the exact location.

Simply the best way to scout out locations that there is. You can see sun angles and pre-visualize light under lots of different conditions. Sometimes you can actually pre-compose your shots! This has saved me many thousands of vertical feet of climbing by avoiding spots with blocked views etc.

Shows the value of knowing your subject/location inside out.. A stunning result. I was reading this morning that Joe Cornish (UK) has produced a book of 100 images of the same small hill at different times and angles. It's easy to forget that location if just a part of the cake with time of day, light and weather all being in the mix too. Best photo blog on the web! All the best.
