On the east side of the 1800' Cramer tunnel, a dozen side dump cars, already loaded, await additional sets of cars.

A loader is filling side dump cars with taconite "chips and fines" that had been brought to the Taconite Harbor dock for possible shipment by boat. Additional empty side dump cars await filing after being moved from another track (in the distance).

The dock is parallel to the lakeshore, in the distance are the engine and side dump cars being loaded.

The loads are first pulled up to the level of the dock, and backed out almost onto the dock. The engines then uncouple, and return to spot empty cars so that they can be loaded with pellets and fines that are in piles alongside the track. Finally, the engines recouple to the loaded cars and continue up the hill to the Cramer Tunnel.
