Deer RubPlay Video

Deer Rub

Went deer hunting yesterday, 16 December 2011, Caddo Grasslands near Honey Grove TX. This is just one of five rubs made by a buck rubbing his horns on saplings. There is a small scrape nearby also. I have sat in this area three times but have not seen the buck that is leaving this sign. Perhaps another hunter has already killed him, though I think not, as I find new rubs each time I go back. Perhaps that deer is just smarter than me. Deer season ends 1 January, and still no venison in the freezer.

Into the basin, Huntsman's Ridge, Colorado

Into the basin, Huntsman's Ridge, Colorado

Looking down from the top of Huntsman's Ridge, near McClure Pass. Taken with my Nikon F and a 200mm lens. I have climbed down into this basin twice, looking for elk. Once I walked through an area that absolutely stunk of elk, but I never saw them. The climb down into the basin is easy, the climb back up and out will kill you.

Kalashnikov

Kalashnikov

The AK47, (Avtomat Kalashnikova), is the most widely recognized, and used, military weapon in the world. This semi-auto version is chambered in the original 7.62x39mm Russian cartridge. The military version is a selective fire weapon that can be fired semi-auto, or full auto. I thought it appropriate to photograph it on the old flag of the USSR. To the right, is an Afghanka hat worn by Soviet troops while fighting in Afghanistan. Note that the muzzle brake is not one normally seen on the AK47, but is the style used on the current Russian service rifle, the AK74, chambered in 5.45x39mm.

Lighting: Three strobe heads bounced off a white wall at the top of the frame, one light bank at the bottom with the light slightly flagged off the bottom of the frame. Camera f16@1/180 sec.
