Details and History

The Wikimedia Commons website offers a multitude of historical images with no restrictions on use. This 1893 B. W. Kilburn stereoview, shows a scene titled Near view of the Ferris Wheel, Midway Plaisance, Columbian Exposition. The eponymous designer of the wheel, George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr., constructed it as a "tallest ever" landmark for the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. This wheel was moved to St. Louis for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition then was demolished in 1906.
