Minolta X-570 "Repair"

by P F McFarland

I had dropped off some film at the pharmacy, so I had a couple hours to kill. Something told me "Go to Goodwill". I went in, and this was locked up in the display case, so I asked to check it out.

When I looked at the camera, they said the shutter didn't work. I noticed it had been wound, but the lever was locked, not loose, which was a good sign no one tried to force the issue. The shutter curtain didn't have a finger hole in it either, so that was a big plus. The inside was clean, while the outside was very dirty, so that meant it hadn't been looked at in a long time. I was hopeful it was just a matter of a dead battery, but didn't feel like I would be out of a lot of money if I took a chance on it ($12.55 with tax). I had been looking to get one of these to go with the X-700 I got last year, but was always afraid of getting took by purchasing online, or having to pay too much for a guaranteed unit. It has the improved viewfinder system, and takes the G winder and M-1 drive, but won't do programmed exposures. Don't use that feature much anyway.

Second easiest repair I've ever done. All it needed was the proper batteries (2 x 357), and it came to life. I first tried 675's, but they are slightly thinner than the 357, and didn't make contact. A washer or two probably could have fixed that. So I cleaned all the crud off it, and now have a nice second body for my Minolta outfit bag.

NOTE: It's a good thing I had this because the X-700 died today (3-17). I think it's the terrible tantalums.
