Halloween 2010

Halloween 2010

Desi is a little polar bear for Halloween! We took him to a costume party and he even decorated his first pumpkin.

The sweater is my Rhinebeck sweater. It's knit out of Manos Silk and Wool, my own design.

Desi in his mommy-knit vest

Desi in his mommy-knit vest

I knit this vest before Desi was born, and it blows my mind that he is
here and is wearing it. I had no clue what it would be like to be a
mom, and I still don't know what each new day will bring. I love every
minute of it, and I love everything about being Desi's mommy.

The yarn is a self striping sock yarn, a cotton wool blend with some
elastic. I think it's called Supersocke 100? The pattern is Teva
Durham's Ballet Tee. It's an adult pattern but I made it baby sized by
using fingering weight yarn and size 2 needles (instead of bulky).

Desi in his Kimono!

Desi in his Kimono!

I realized the last photo I uploaded was the kimono I made for
"Gonzo." Well, Gonzo was born 4 months ago, and his official name is
Desi! He is the greatest. Here he is in his kimono.

Gonzo's Kimono

Gonzo's Kimono

Gonzo is our code name for our little one, due in May. This is a kimono I whipped up for him or her using Japanese fabric from Superbuzzy. The pattern is called Lucy's Kimono from Heather Ross' book Weekend Sewing.

The pattern was easy to follow, except for the ties. If you are going to make this pattern, make sure one of the inside ties goes to the wrong side, and that one goes to the right side. The pattern doesn't mention anything about this, but it's necessary in order to close the kimono on the inside.

Don't be like me! I made both ties go to the outside (which makes no sense now, but it seemed to be what the pattern was saying). I ended up just cutting off the ties that were supposed to tie on the inside. The inner layer of fabric might fall because of my mistake, but this is just a prototype, and if it doesn't work, it can be a little bathrobe or something.

I plan on making another one, but with the correct tie placement. This was my first time working with bias tape. I have to remember to match the thread to the bias tape too, next time.
