40 to 1 - A drop at a time
Harvesting sap for maple syrup is an annual event in Big Hill Park. They used to use pails, now they use these blue plastic bags. You can see tree after tree with these bags hanging from them.
I think it takes 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup. (I remembered it correctly - www.massmaple.org/how.html - is an interesting reference site.)
This shot captured a drop of sap as it hit inside the bag. The drip rates were quite high on most of the trees, possibly due to very heavy rains and snow a few days earlier. To the right of the bag, you can see the scars of previous year's taps for sap.
