We were driving. However, a few days later, 20 minutes after seeing grizzlies (pictures to be posted later), we were coming back from the artist's paint pots, and were the only people there abou 1/4 mile from the car. There was buffalo dung everywhere, and signs not to go off trail because of the thin crust and scalding risk in this geothermal area. Anyway, it was thick short pines, and we heard a soft snort, and then not 15 feet from us was a big bull 1.5 ton buffalo and 2 of its buddies. We went off the trail instantly in spite of the warnings. It and its friends mosied by like nothing happened, May they are chilled out because they have nothing to do with raising the calves, and have already mated and just chill all summer. The poor moms are up all night protecting their calves from grizzlies--since they calves are a favorite food. In the fall that would have been a much more intense encounter because in mating season the males are downright grumpy.
I went to Badlands National Park a few years before, and the buffalo are infinitely more tense there--I am pretty sure even though I sat submissively instantly due to the look I got from one of the buffalos (the others were more relaxed), that even 100 yards away, and down and up a hill, I almost got charged. I was driving to another part of that park another day, and a buffalo would not let me drive through. As a renter you pay for gored cars, so I didn't push my luck. I stopped my car withing 200 feet and turned around. Another car did not, and it startled that buffalo, which happily did not charge the car--but the car was lucky.
Anyway, the buffalo do injure more people than any other creature in Yellowstone, though if you keep a distance all is well. They are pretty tolerant of us! HOpe you had a great Mardi Gras. Elaine PS These are my favorite animals in the park.

Wonderful family of bison. We have 2200 head on the TNC property and many very dented trucks.

I saw my 1st buffalo wih my r/mate 1969.We we were by the lodges by old Faithful ' couldn't believe how massive they were.In 1995 my husband and I took a quick detour there .We were driving slow on a road when we had to stop.A whole herd of the m with calves were on the road and along side of it .Allen is from Conn. and hasnever seen buffaloes up this close before. The herd was so large it would had made mincemeat out of the cars and all of us people.
