What Was On That Steak?

What Was On That Steak?

One of the magnificent brothers at Royal Melbourne Zoo

Couldn't quite eliminate the cage from the photo. At the time of the photo, nearly 3 years ago now, there were 4 brothers all from the same litter.

I am told that one has since died in the past year, but i hope that is not right. I visited the zoo a month ago after 18 months, and saw 3 of them.

Battle Scarred

Battle Scarred

This magnificent lion has quite a few tooth marks and claw marks from his brothers!

They sure play rough when its feeding time. Otherwise they are very affectionate with each other.

The claws are unsheathed when its a battle over food, despite there being plenty for each of them.

I tried to get this shot such that it looks like the lion is OUTSIDE the cage!

I have taken this photo thru the fence, the wire behind is an inner part of the enclosure where they entice the lions in, then lock them so they can access the main enclosure.

There is a drinking bowl very close by and it is awesome to see them from a few feet away

Golden Glow

Golden Glow

One of the four mighty lions, all from the same litter of cubs at Royal Melbourne Zoo, Australia.

A few times i have seen, heard and felt the amazing power of their roars!
Sometimes the roars start immediately their is public address announcements - perhaps they hate the sound of that man's voice?
It must be truly intimidating to other animals, especially at night in the African bush - especially if you are a likely lion dinner!

The combined roars is truly awesome.

HUGE!

HUGE!

From my archives...

This is the biggest eastern grey kangaroo i have ever seen, it must have been about 80Kg, and it towered over me when it stood upright.

It was a total shock to both of us - i have never before, and never since seen a kangaroo in the main picnic area of Pound Bend during the day - this was about lunch-time, if i remember. Roos will come after dusk, their scat is sometimes around, but this was incredible. To get here they have to come down a km long track, a fair way from the bush where they normally are.

I had by accident trapped this roo off from any escape, so i backed away after taking photos.
There is a narrow strip of thick ferns going from the river path down to the river - and i have never seen anything other than birds in there.

The next photo shows what I first saw!

The picnic ground is about a 150 metres long by about 30 metres wide, and there is a narrow path that winds along the river for about 1km, which links to bushland, where the roos normally live.
