( Had posted this one a couple years back. I found a great story tonight about a racing mule that goes well with Junior,s story of his racing mule, " Frances " . Posting it in the comment section below. )
Off of Hwy. 61, Adair County, Kentucky in the Community of Breeding. Seems if the time is taken to talk, everyone has a story to tell. I was searching the area for one room schools and not having much luck when I first saw Junior by his barn fixing a freeze proof water hydrant. After going to the fourth school site that I had listed in the area and finding not a thing, I decided to talk to the older gentleman working by the barn if he was still there. Real good idea. Junior had went to school at two of them in his school days, and told when the other two were torn down. His arthritis was bothering him and he suggested setting on the tailgate of his truck and letting his legs rest a while. Politics were discussed, making sure that i was not a Republican and he got to talking about his military experience. Drafted as a teenager and served during the Korean War, spending forty-two straight days on Heartbreak Ridge. A true hero. Junior wanted to know if I knew a Jim Bob Wade who lived in Marion County. When he found out that I did, he had to tell me about buying a racing mule from him that went by the name of " Frances" . Jim Bob had raced the mule in Kentucky and several other states in " Mule Races" and according to Junior, Frances was never beaten. Junior bought " Frances" from Jim Bob when the mule was sixteen years old, and raced the mule quite a bit for several more years, again never losing a race. Junior went on to say " fastest mule he ever saw." I made a comment about how rare the Moorman Signs on his barn were getting to be, and he shocked me with " You want one of them?" When i found out he was serious, I helped him take one down and could not argue about his logic in this. " I have two, one should be enough." It looks good on my office wall!!!
