In-Memoriam Weston-Super-Mare Pier

Weston-Super-Mare Pier was destroyed by fire today, 28th July 2008. This photograph was taken in June 2008 shortly after it re-opened from it's refurbishment.

There has been a pier on this site for around 90 years, it last burnt down in 1930 and took 3 years to rebuild. It is the 1930 section that has been completely destroyed, but it is too soon to say as yet how much can be saved.

No way! That's sad. Why do these things seem to be so vulnerable I wonder?

Such a loss. This beautiful award winning Pleasure Pier had just been renovated. There does seem to be a suspicous trend in the fire destruction of protected historic Seaside Piers and amusement areas in England. It is so odd that I was just reading about this Pier when I heard the news. I better go visit Southend-On-Sea while I can. I do hope Weston-Super-Mare Pier is rebuilt. My sympathy from America for your loss.

This is wonderful. A shame that it is gone.

A real shame that greater care was not taken to safeguard the structure, preventing exactly this sort of tragedy from occuring.

Nice picture. It'll help when the memories start to fade.
