Southern Oregon Coast

I like this~~
Surreal!
Southern Oregon Coast by Jesse Estes.
I usually get a couple of e-mails each week in regards to filter questions, and while I used to answer them when I had time, these days, I just don't have the time to respond to each e-mail with a detailed answer. If I don't have the time to answer an e-mail correctly, I usually just don't answer it. I decided to write up a quick article that answers the most common questions I get, and now I can just send people the link to the blog post. Pretty smart eh... Not sure why it took me so long to think of that. I'm by no means an expert on the topic, but hopefully it may help someone out along their filter journey.

The short article can be found on my website:
www.jesse-estes.com

This is a slightly different composition of an older image. I think the lines in the sand work better on this one. I also left it dark to bring out the saturation. This one was taken well after the sun had already set, and I was driving back to my campsite when I noticed this spot along the road.

Good idea about the filters. I will check that out soon. I like the darker processing here, as you say, the colours come alive a little more. I also really like it when an image has light on dark and dark on light. You have that in the ripples here. It was a cubist idea really, that Picasso and Braque pioneered in the early 20th C. They tried to make each shape stand out against the other with localised contrast, and it always looks great to me. I think you got some of that here.

Joe Rainbow (Rainbow man)  Pro User  says:

Hi Jesse,
I have just read your blog on filter use, and it is really helpful. Particularly the bit on hand holding. I have always wondered though, if the polariser should be the first thing the light goes through. I heard that it should be, and from experimenting have found that it can create a weird light patch when also using GND filters. Do you also find that ? I was considering the huge 105mm polariser for the Lee kit. Maybe not worth it. I use a 77mm B&W polariser. It annoys me that it is so thick, and I also find cleaning Hoya's really hard :( Anyway, would be interested to know about the polariser positioning if you get time.

Jesse Estes  Pro User  says:

Rainbow - I may have read the same thing somewhere, but I don't have any problems with the polarizer on first. I also don't really stack filters other than a grad most of the time. I suppose it could be a problem with a bunch of filters, but I'm not sure.
