The inside of an automatic weighing and sorting machine

This marvel of automation is on display at the old US Mint in New Orleans. Coins were minted here. This machine weighed blank coins before they were struck.

 

If a blank weighed too much, it would get routed to a container and material would be filed off. If it weighed less than specified it would get sent back to the melting pot.
