Hermanus Whale

Hermanus Whale

I love this in black and white. It kinda gives an eerie atmosphere and surreal feeling, which suits the subject. These spectacular mammals who roam the oceans and then suddenly arise to have a look at the world above them. It never fails to move me.

Souther Right whale at Hermanus

Souther Right whale at Hermanus

A Southern Right whale breaching the sea just off shore at Hermanus on the Western Cape of South Africa. So called because the whalers found that they floated after they had been slaughtered making them the "right" whales to go for. Way wrong nowadays but those were different times. Thankfully these ones are gazed at in awe as they play in the seas around them to attract mates......or maybe just to have fun !

Also known as the Wine Route, Route 62 leads through the wine-growing areas of Wellington, Tulbagh, Worcester, Robertson and the Klein Karoo and is thus one of the longest wine routes in the world.
Route 62 spans a distance of 850 km from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth

Montagu from the summit of Bloupunt

Montagu from the summit of Bloupunt

View from the summit of "Bloupunt" near Montagu in South Africa. Approx 1200 metres (3600 feet) high. Signed the visitors book at the top ! The town of Montagu way below in the distance and the Langeberg mountains behind the town stretching away into the distance. Its a walk of about 12 miles (15 kms) to get back to the start. My path was blocked by a troop of baboons as I finished !

Old Harbour Hermanus

Old Harbour Hermanus

"The Old Harbour at Hermanus" This is the town that has the most enviable of claims to fame as the best land based whale watching in the world. A short time later this whole bay was filled with whales. The area is stunningly beautiful. We had a meal outdoors in a restaurant just above the cliffs and you could hear the whales in the dark. It was very atmospheric, and unforgetable
