I've only been to the northern side of LI, I'll def have to explore this part. I bet people outside of NY never associate scenes like this with the city. Being in LI makes ya feel like you're a world away from the city. Bet it was a fun day!

The south shore has fantastic beaches, interesting wetlands and pleasant towns. Need to go all the way out to Montauk next time (a very long car ride)!

Yes, Montauk is still on my list! I have to take my son to see the remnants of Tesla's lab (on the way out to Montauk), and we really want to explore all the weird stuff out at Montauk. Ever since that pot sticker looking creature washed ashore, my son has been interested in the place. I've wanted to go since I was a child and heard all the creepy stories about the underground chambers. Of course, it's probably a beautiful location and worth the drive simply for that! :-)

Long Island is full of mystery and wonder. :) There's the "bottomless", haunted Lake Ronkonkoma, the gamma ray-leaking Brookhaven National Lab, the Amityville Horror house, anthrax-riddled Plum Island, Amy Fisher, Katie Beer's dungeon, multiple plane crashes and UFO sightings, secret abandoned coastal defense and radar installations. See this excellent story for more on my homeland:
