@andwhatnow: Nope, not Photoshopped beyond a minor levels adjustment and sharpening. Lens used was the excellent Sigma 30mm f/1.4. Actually, my preference would have been to have just one of the books in focus instead of two. :)

In addition, I think what appears to be razor-sharp definitions in the depth of field is actually due to the generous curvature of the spines of the book. The planes of what would be partially focused areas lie in between the books, hidden behind the curved spines. So, volume 17 appears in focus, and volume 18 is blurred, and where the books touch is in-between, except you can't see it because of volume 18's spine. Does that make sense?

I have the lens so I should just try it out :-) So far I only use it for mid-distance portraits so I haven't yet tried to get such a selective d.o.p. Thanks for the details!

I know some people have complained about quality control issues with this (and other) Sigma lenses, but my copy is just fine. It doesn't seem to have any issues, as far as I can tell. Love it! Hope yours gives you good service as well.

Sorry, my mistake, it's actually under a Creative Commons, Non-Commercial, Attribution license, and I've changed it to that in the settings. Basically, I allow use of my photos on blogs/essays/media, for non-profits and journalists to utilize, but for commercial use such as on a law firm website I'd charge a standard fee for that.
