JFK's Yacht Manitou
When I saw this yawl from a distance, its classic lines and fine woodwork stood out from the crowd of modern fiberglass powerboats. I knew it was special, so I ran over and took a couple of photos. It was the 62' long Manitou, the "floating White House" of John F. Kennedy! It was built in 1937 of mahogany and teak, with butternut interiors, for James Lowe of Chicago. It was donated to the Coast Guard, then Kennedy used it as Presidential yacht, and later it fell into private hands and was recently up for sale. Too bad it didn't end up in the collection of the Kennedy Library, it would make a beautiful exhibit. None of the tourists in Annapolis were paying her much attention, which is a shame, even without the Presidential pedigree.
