Aquest castell fou el punt neuralgic del poder exercit per Janos Hunyadi (o Iancu de Hunedoara en romanès) sobre gran part dels balcans i el regne de Hongria. Aquí mateix Janos, com a regent d'Hongria, coronà princep de Valaquia (a l'exili) a Vlad III Dracula! Es a dir, que aquest castell té molt més a veure amb el famós Empalador que no pas el de Bran, publicitat arreu sense cap fonament.
El nom de Hunedoara en hongarès és Vajdahunyad.
