• Rainbow caused by moonlight.

Moon Rainbow

This is a color version of an earlier B&W post that I am putting up to show a phenomenon that I had not heard of before. A moon rainbow.

While this photo looks like it was taken during the day, it is actually a 10 minute exposure taken last Saturday night during a full moon. (I have lightened the image to make the rainbow more apparent which also gives it more of a daytime feel)

While the shot was being exposed I noticed the arc of light and it took me a minute to figure out what I was looking at. I couldn't see the colors at the time, but when I uploaded the image I knew I had captured something unique. A rainbow from moonlight in the mist of the waterfall.

A Time magazine article from 1938 about moon rainbows.

Even more impressive after you read about the shot.

I think the B&W one stands out more, but the details make this a remarkable image.

It's always amazing what cameras "see" that we don't notice until we view the image. That's a cool photo and the rainbow gives it that extra touch.

I can't believe that this is being lit by the moon..... how cool is that!?. This is a great shot.....the rainbow is a bonus.

You answered the question I posed in the black & white version's comments. And again, I'll say I'm so jealous of your subject matter! Big city photogs could try and get these lovely velvety, shadowy results but everything I try over 60 seconds is just burned out. 10 minutes and I'd be looking at a big bright yellow flare. Haha. Beautiful! And thanks for the lesson, I learn so much from everyone here.

This'd be great even without the rainbow.

This is great- much better in colour than in B&W too.
