Sicily, a tourist destination
Tourism is one of the most important factors in the economy of Sicily. However, this year the numer of foreign visitors to the island has suffered a major decrease (by 12 per cent in Taormina in May 2008, compared to the same month the year before). Many attribute this to the expensive Euro, and to overall sinking living standards, but I think there may be other reasons... this photograph shows a scene that you can meet all too often in Sicily, within and outside population centers. I do not believe that this is what tourists come to see. Photograph taken near Paternò, south side of Etna, 13 June 2008

You are totally right! The island and its landscape and heritage are a treasure and should also be treated as such.
Well I guess I should support this kind of "Sicilian economy" this year!
