End of an era

End of an era

Once upon a time, the mandate of television was to entertain, inform and educate.

Today, television is fabricated entertainment, too often sold as 'truth'.

Jim and Allan were one of the few to fight for the balance, often out of their own pockets.

I'll dearly miss this great little station that could...

Zimbabwe / Zambia Border Victoria Falls _D7C19229

Zimbabwe / Zambia Border Victoria Falls _D7C19229

Unlike The Niagara or The Iguaçu, the Victoria Falls do not cascade into a lake to create a vantage point across the shore for a complete panorama. The Victoria Falls instead crash into an enormous chasm, from which clouds of water spray tend to rise. At the opposite edge of the chasm you're too close to shoot the whole width of the Falls even with a 14mm lens. Worse, there is often little to see apart from multiple rainbows while getting completely soaked. So how to capture the entirity of the world's biggest waterfall?

Get a helicopter!

Zimbabwe / Zambia Border Victoria Falls _D7C19233

Zimbabwe / Zambia Border Victoria Falls _D7C19233

A rickety steel bridge crosses the exit gorge of the Victoria Falls between Zimbabwe and Zambia. The best way to experience it is to go to the Zimbabwe customs post just before sunset, join the cue with the locals and then walk with them along the railway track to the bridge. The Zambia border is on the other side, back far enough to enable a bustling trade of everyday goods across the bridge.

No photograph does justice to the sensation of stopping at the centre of the bridge with the trade passing behind you, the massive volume of water forcing its way through the gorge below against the roar of the Victoria Falls like a giant stage curtain in the back of the gorge as the sunset behind you paints everything in warm hues.

This is my poor attempt at capturing the experience.
