A Room with a View

A Room with a View

From inside a large sleeping area(?) for prisoners at the erstwhile Central Prison of Tamilnadu.

This is my first attempt at a rather complex method of converting a colour photo to sepia, as opposed to simply doing something like Convert->Sepia.

Viewing it on black seems to bring out the details in the wall better.

Constructive criticism will be appreciated.

La Primavera

La Primavera

Took this a shot a few Sundays ago, when the temperature outside was still bearable.

This was taken from the terrace*, and the leaves are part of a vast canopy of a tree that you see everywhere in these parts. (Just don't know its name. I'd be happy if someone could identify it for me.) The colours of the leaves, the shaving brush-like flowers and the clear blue sky always had my attention. A normal, horizontal shot was just too bland, so while trying to photograph a bee-like insect that was hovering around, I had the idea of taking the diagonal route.

Constructive criticism is welcome.

The Sisterhood

The Sisterhood

I had just about enough time to get a few shots of the conjunction of the Moon and the Pleiades.

The Pleiades star cluster is an open cluster: young, irregularly placed group of stars that were all formed in the same region of space (from the same molecular cloud, to be precise) and are gravitationally bound together, though not as tight as a globular cluster.

The Pleiades, or M45, gets its name from Greek Mythology. The seven stars that are usually easily seen with naked eyes were considered to be the seven daughters of Atlas.

In India, we call this Krithika or Karthigai. It's in the constellation of Taurus ((V)Rishabham).

During an occultation such as this one, the stars slowly "approach" the moon, and as they reach the limb, they start to "blink" for a little time, i.e., they pass behind the mountains and other irregularities on the Moon, and then are hidden for a while. Sometime later, they emerge on the other side.

Since I had quite a lot of work to do yesterday, I couldn't stay and enjoy the whole show, sadly. :(

Vaibhav lost in thought

Vaibhav lost in thought

Meet my nephew, Vaibhav.

A serious look for a little boy, perhaps, but I really like how this photo has turned out. Used the in-camera B/W mode; slightly increased contrast and a little unsharp mask.

He was having his breakfast of idlis with sugar, and that's what you see around his mouth. :)
