Tattooed Women of Myanmar

Women from Chin State, Myanmar (Former Burma) with their faces covered with tattoos.
The ritual once performed as a way of making girls ‘ugly’ and protect them from the king of Burma, eventually lost its original meaning and started to be seen as a mark of attractiveness. It was officially banned by the socialist regime in the 1960s.These are the some of the few remaining tattooed women now all in their 60s to 80s. When they died, the ancient tradition will die with them.
