Historic Valdese
Burke County, NC

The town of Valdese is a Waldensian settlement in the foothills of NC in eastern Burke County. A group of Waldenses from the Cottian Alps of Northern Italy settled near the Catawba River in Burke County in 1893. This settlement became Valdese.

The Old Rock School was built by the original settlers of Valdese in 1923 from rocks removed from their fields. It was renovated in the 1970's.

Valdese, NC is rich in history and is well worth a visit.

McGalliard Falls

McGalliard Falls

McGalliard Falls Park
Valdese
Burke County, NC

This waterfall is next to Meytre's Grist Mill. The falls stands appoximately 40 feet high.

This would have not been the location I would have chosen to get the best photo of this falls, but I did not want to risk life and limb to get to the bottom along the river bank. Perhaps if I were younger....

Valdese
Burke County, NC

This old mill was originally constructed by Fred Meytre in 1906. In 1916 a flood washed the original waterwheel away and it was changed over to turbine power. Meytre operated the mill until 1941 producing corn mill, wheat for flour and hammer mill for livestock feed. The mill is located next to McGalliard Falls which is a 40 foot falls.

The mill was rebuilt when Mcgalliard Falls Park was created in 1982. FDA regulations limit the mill's output to products not for human consumption.
