I finally got around to installing this chainguard that I had modified a while back. Used some vintage French hardware that I had only imagined actually existed until I saw some on ebay.

Thanks, if you're familiar with the stock VO chainguard store.velo-orange.com/index.php/accessories/chainguards-s... it's not very nice, just a flat slab of aluminum, but I thought it could look pretty good with some sort of cutout.

I used a drill press, jigsaw with a metal cutting blade, and a small mill file to smooth the cut edge. A hand drill would also work fine. The key thing in cutting out thin metal sheet is to attach a sacrificial backer of plywood or similar material with double faced tape so that you are cutting through both materials at the same time. To start the cut you need to drill a couple of holes large enough for the jig saw blade to fit through.

Very nice job! I've been thinking about making a couple of CLB-esque chainguards from scratch. I was originally thinking about using a milling machine, but now I'm starting to think I could do it just as easily freehand, using your method, seeing as precision isn't really that crucial with this type of component.
