      What a great shot!
      The steely-eyed dealer of death!
It looks amazingly sharp, you must have some good long glass...

Good glass or skill as a stalker perhaps. Superb shot.

Thanks spkennedy3000 and kate&drew - it is stalking, walking slowly and steadily directly towards the bird after walking past and away works for me. The bird is unable to detect the change of direction for a while and I got quite close.

Oh what a wonderful shot, I am yet to get a good shot of a heron always to far away or I am not fast enough to get an inflight shot, says alot really as they are quite slow inflight never mind one day perhaps.

@ Maria I normally do not get goods shots of Herons this one was hungry perhaps (this was during the flooding in Tamworth) and he did not want to move...
@Darkenergy777 Thanks for stopping by, and you kind comment, keep up the good work and let me know when you do your first exhibit - I would love to see them all together in a gallery.

Thanks tinyfishy, I had it on my camera for more than two months before I realised it a good shot - how bad is that.....

I have come across grey herons twice in my life, and both times simply by accident and it's hard to know which one of us were startled first, but the sightings have all been on the wing with the bird rushing out of the marsh lands. But I have yet to see a bird that thrilled me more. This is a fantastic capture of this bird with beautiful details!!!! I can certainly sense the stillness of the moment.

@Margaret They can be very shy and I have seen grey herons that will not let you get within a 100 metres. This one was quite near a footpath and may have used to people passing quite close also it may have been hungry as there had been flooding which disturbs feeding patterns and makes all creatures take more chances. Yes it was very stll - like a statue....

Very nice! What focal length were you shooting at?

    16. c-a-vu (58 months ago | reply)

@markkilner Thanks, 600mm which as my ccd is not full size gives a greater magnification than you would expect of a 600mm. I shoved the ISO right up to 800 at f8 and managed to get a shutter speed of 1/800th essential for a hand held shot at this magnification. Even so this is the middle 1/4 of the image.

Good detail for ISO800, a lovely photo well done.

    18. c-a-vu (58 months ago | reply)

Thanks ashton_martin I must give the credit to Canon on the ISO - considering the ccd is not full sized it does not seem to produce too much noise.

How lucky is that? to get such an opportunity to take this photo...great detail.

    20. c-a-vu (58 months ago | reply)

Thanks Mad Mummy, I can't tell you how many other times I have failed to get a good shot of a heron, it gets me down sometimes when I get a run of bad luck, but then everything comes around and luck returns and the trying is all worth while...

Excellent. These are tricky to get close to.
