Coyote for Breakfast

Coyote for Breakfast

The fellows in the room next to ours at Stovepipe Wells had cooked a vegetarian breakfast outdoors using a small propane stove placed on the rock half-wall next to the parking area. They were back in their room getting ready to hit the road.

As I left our room to get something from the car before going to breakfast at the restaurant I saw this coyote on the ridge behind the last of the rooms. I called out to Nancy & got my camera. The guys next door came out too & we took some time getting shots of this sweet coyote.

Apparently, the outdoor cooking had enticed the coyote to check out the area the day before too. She looked pretty healthy, and we didn't feed her.

Scotty's View

Scotty's View

We spent only a short time at Scotty's Castle. We didn't want to go on the tour again, and we were feeling lazy & wanting to be on the road. I did take a few minutes to walk around the picnic area south of the parking lot where I caught the sun trying to break through the clouds.

More Promises

More Promises

Traveling further north toward Scotty's Castle the clouds lowered into the surrounding mountains, leaving the valley relatively clear.

Promises

Promises

Leaving Titus Canyon, we headed north toward Scotty's Castle. Just for the leisurely drive. On the way, clouds kept rolling in. There had been snow in the higher elevations the day before so we thought there might be a chance of rain. Not to be on this day.

$1 Cairn

$1 Cairn

We drove out to the end of the two-way section of road at Titus Canyon and walked in from there. The gravel road is one way, against us as we went. There is a spring about 6.5 miles in, but we were feeling lazy and didn't go even half that distance.

Some ways in we saw this cairn on the south side of the road. I guess the dollar is for whoever needs gas money after their trip through. Farther on we came across two more cairns: One was topped with a Lincoln penny. The other cairn was built by a real tightwad - no money at all on it!
