U.S.S. Los Angeles Naval Monument

Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 188, dedicated to the personnel and ships of the U.S. Navy.

Heavy Cruiser U.S.S. Los Angeles (CA 135) was commissioned on 7/22/45. After being taken out of service in 1948, it was recommissioned in 1951 to serve in the Korean War. Finally decommissioned on 11/15/63, the ship was sold for scrap in 1975.

 

The memorial, designed by Terryle Smeed, was dedicated on December 1, 1977. Anchors' loan from the U.S. Navy, mainmast and mooring bits donated by Joseph S. Schapiro, rigging donated by Coordinated Equipment Services, and services from Roy Coats & Charles Slocombe. The plaque is from C.M. Bailey U.S.N. Ret.
