California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) flowers on the Morro Bay, CA ca-poppy-on-morro-bay-harborwalk-4

California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) flowers on the Morro Bay, CA Harborwalk on Coleman Avenue near Morro Rock. 05 August 2008. Michael "Mike" L. Baird, Canon PowerShot SD950IS, built-in flash, resting on concrete walkway curb.

This photo illustrates some common techniques involving C "getting closer" and "using a [say, low] non-usual angle to take the image, and using Portrait mode to comose some scenes (in this case done in post-process by cropping]. CAPIT is our acronym for the first five rules for beginners.

    In summary:
    CAPIT 5-step lesson
There are five basic questions to answer each time you take a photo.
If there were only 2 choices for each of these 5 variables, that would be 32 combinations.
Do you consider all of the many possible setups for a each shot, and then select the best?
Even pros sometimes forget these basics.
Remember to always "Cap your lens - CAPIT"

C Closer, get closer, or go further back?

A Angle of photo, get Low, high, or take from the same elevation?

    P Portrait or Landscape Mode?

I Incidence of Light, from behind, front, side, or best to use a flash?

T Thirds composition used so subject is not always simply centered?

Allen Rockwell's LUDA rules were also followed... namely... Look Up, Down, and all Around ... the best shot is rarely right in front of you at eye level.

It's so vibrant that it seems to emitting it's own light! You'll have to show me this 8 - 29 mm macro lens.

Steve Corey This was taken from the ultra compact Canon PowerShot SD950 IS camera. It is a great camera, but I now wish I had purchased the Canon PowerShot G9 with raw, external flash, and manual controls.

I'd rest my camera on a concrete curd for that shot anyday! Awesome!

Nicely done. The low angle makes this work very well. I like seeing the sky in the bg.

You are at the angle again, Mike. Love the light in this one. It is hard to keep up with all the photographs. I do not know how you do it and still have time to take so many photos.
