Male Frigate birds getting all puffed up
We went to Isla Contoy in March 2009. Contoy is a very small island about 26 miles from Isla Mujeres. The island is a nature preserve and the government only allows about 200 people per day to visit. The boat ride there was an adventure - about 1.5 hours in a small motor boat literally pounding the waves - by the time we got there everyone on the boat was soaked. Lessons learned - take a raincoat! The island has a great swimming and snorkeling beach, trails to different parts of the island, and a nice lagoon full of nesting birds. The only problem was most tours only spend 3-4 hours on the island - definitely not enough time. If you have a chance, go for it!
