I've known Ray for nearly 20 years. When I met him, he was a young, married school teacher and talented poet who owned his own home. When his marriage broke up, he became my nextdoor neighbor. Over the years, he has struggled with personal issues that led him to homelessness. Today, I saw him for the first time in a decade. We walked and talked awhile, and caught up on old times and old friends--some living, some dead. Fortunately, Ray isn't on the streets anymore. He has a place, a roommate, a counselor, and is getting some of the help he needs.
