tree on white

    large | black & white | popular

Dedicated to those of you that have experienced a recent loss in your lives. I wish you time to reflect and strength to move on.

This is certainly a classic (or cliché if you prefer) but I hope this photographic work is not dismissed as too ethereal. I had always wanted to create my own version of the lonely tree on the hill. Given the amounts of snow and fog we have had here this winter this looked like the obvious choice. I have enjoyed music composed by Erik Satie while working on this creation and I therefore encourage you to view this large on white while listening to Gymnopédie No.1 - also a classic but still genius in its simplicity.

Comments without graphics are much appreciated. Thank you.

This one is tough for me. It's hard to judge the tech side when it's tweaked so much but that's expressionism I guess. It does look surreal obviously but not over done. I can't comment on sharpness to well except for saying the detail looks defined. The exposure is another one that's too tough to judge here. I will say that the processing was handled well and I think definately brings out what you wanted.

      Composition: 8
Great comp here. Placement works well. I'd be curious to see better use of the thirds though - maybe an intersection placement of the tree. The focal length is well chosen I think.

      Impact: 6
It's a great minimalistic image. I appreciate it more the more I look at it. But for me the over processing initially turned me off - it seemed more like a painting. I think it does accomplish what you were looking for though. Great accompanying music - thanks.

      Commercial Viability: 8
Fine art definately. I could easily see this in a restaurant.

the technical work looks perfect as hikey picture. Everything in foreground and back is drained in white. Only the subject in the tree and reed shows drawing in a subtle grey.

      Composition: 8
the composition of the visible components and there relation together are my favourite. The tree looks perfect and the reeds on both sides also. I would never change anything here.

I am not sure with the placement of this subject in the white. I would try to shift it to the left. With the same distance to the edge as it placed now on the right. What is the reason? Now, the main view direction is directly to the subject. When the subject is placed on the left the eye could find a space to view behind. I mean this would increase the mood.

      Impact: 8
I am surprised on the impact. Normally on snowy landscapes I prefer the white on the trees. From snow or frost, of course.

      Commercial Viability: 8
for me its an inspiration to find a new subject in this endless winter time.

Well, technically speaking it seems the only thing to judge here is the postprocessing. It is easy to see what you were going for in PP so I think you pretty much nailed it. Just enough contrast to define the tree and brush but not too much which would take away from the ethereal feel.

      Composition: 8
I love the use of blank space here as the whole lower half of the image still feels like a hill even without any detail and takes me up to the tree. I like the amount of space surrounding the tree and brush too. Once I get to the tree, the fading brush to the left seem to pull me that way so I like that there is more blank space on the left then the right. What I'm unsure about is the sky. I'm not drawn up into it so I wonder if there could be a little less, yet when I try any crops, they feel too crowded. So I can't put my finger on it but something confuses me there. Funny, as I look at it again, I am pulled from the bottom left up beyond the tree to the right. When it pulls me this way, the balance seems better. Sorry, that probably wasn't too helpful! I like the comp though.

      Impact: 8
I like a well done overly simple shot like this that leaves a lot to the imagination to fill in the details. Personally though, to me it looks too much like a pencil sketch. I'm wondering if the same effect could be achieved with a more photographic look or that line that would make one question: "is it a photo or a drawing?" This one tips too strongly towards the "looks like a sketch" direction. That is my only criticism really, otherwise, I think it's a great image.

      Commercial Viability: 8
Fine art or matte greeting cards? Themed calendar?
