March fly on a leaf
Male March fly (family: Bibionidae)
Also known as "love bugs"
These were hovering around a bush one day, about 60 of them. I waited for one to land and got this shot. Although it's not visible from this angle, they have a very thin and relatively long abdomen (or tail). Here the abdomen, except for a few hairs, lies completely hidden behind the front wing -- with some room to spare.
Here's a link to my shot of one in flight (as seen in profile) -- March fly in flight.
Bibionid flies are important pollinators of many plants.
