Gerry Forsberg

Gerry Forsberg

Gerry Forsberg was a Canadian-born marathon swimmer and, apparently, all round good egg. In 1959 he was the first person to complete the 18 miles (29km) two-way crossing of Morecambe Bay, in a time of 6 hours 23 minutes. It's been calculated that in his 25 year long distance swimming career he swam nearly 9,000 miles. His memorial has recently been moved to a more prominent location on Morecambe promenade. The citation reads...

"
Commander Charles Gerald Forsberg OBE, RN [Rtd]
18th June 1914 - 24th October 2000

This memorial acknowledges the retirement wish of 'Gerry' Forsberg to "sit facing Morecambe Bay and imbibe the matchless view."
Gerry's life embraced the sea. He was a Master Mariner, served with courage and distinction with the Royal Navy in W.W.II and, latterly, became a most respected Marine Salvage Officer.
He was also a marathon swimmer whose swims include the English Channel [World Record 1957], Lough Neagh and Loch Lomond and 29 crossings of this, his beloved Bay.
Recognised internationally he remains an inspirational figure to those who attempt to emulate his remarkable achievements.
A prodigious author, scholar and most gentle and amiable of men, Gerry is constantly recalled with great affection by his many friends.

Presented by the British Long Distance Swimming Association."

Still Life with Plastic Cupid and Self

Still Life with Plastic Cupid and Self

My first attempt at a Utata Iron Photographer project. The compulsory elements were...

1 - cross-processing
2 - over the shoulder
3 - cinematic aspect ratio

The composition is loosely based on Cezanne's 'Still Life with Plaster Cupid', with tongue firmly in cheek. It's a painting that's intrigued and puzzled generations of art lovers and academics. I hope I've managed to add to the confusion.

Atoll

Atoll

A sand bar uncovered by the ebbing tide.
A spring-like morning of sunshine slowly burns the sea mist.
Colour returns to Morecambe after a long, grey winter.
