...covering the ice cellar at Eikenrode. The stone cellar was probably built on ground level, and then covered with earth dug up from ponds on either side of it. The earth covering guaranteed a steady, low temperature for the cellar. Filled with blocks of ice, it worked like a refrigerator until far into the summer.
The first door to the cellar, leading into this hallway, was broken by vandals earlier this year. One can now just walk ino the cellar.
