College students, which Florida State is obviously choc full of, are notorious for our supposed debauchery and party-centric antics—behavior that Olympic athletes, apparently, seem to share with us.
Although summer terms mean that there are fewer students at FSU, the partying is in no way eliminated, even though students are taking classes, just like students do every fall and spring. Indeed, partying often increases in those two semesters with the possible connections to football season in fall and the fairer weather during most of Spring semester. In a fashion similar to that of college students who party on weekends and hit the books during the week, competitors at the Olympic games are now being exposed as their own breed of party animals.
According to The New York Post, a new anonymously authored exposé titled The Secret Olympics has been published in time for the games this summer. It provides never-before-seen insight into the previously hidden insanity that takes place in the Olympic village, where athletes live during the games. Written by a former British competitor, The Secret Olympics delves into the mystery surrounding the activities of the participants when they are not competing.
The anonymous author writes, “Organizers supplied 70,000 condoms to athletes at the 2000 summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. The stockpile ran out in a week.” However, quotes from athletes indicate that this supposed partying evidence is merely a prank done on an enormous scale.
“It’s tradition—taking so many that they have to replace them,” says Todd Lodwick, two-time gold medalist and five-time Olympic Nordic combined athlete. “It’s a myth.” Whether prank or actual party evidence, the consumption of 70,000 condoms in one week is definitely something that college students find funny as a prank, and impressive as sexual truth.
Another Olympic athlete, who spoke with The Post on condition of anonymity, says “When I’m there, I’m in two different gears. I’m so focused that I see nothing else, or I’m partying my butt off.” Her quote accurately echoes the sentiment behind the phrase work hard, play harder, which is definitely something college students, and students at FSU, excel at.
Lodwick also went on to admit that Olympians do have more sex than usual when they are at the Olympics. However, Lodwick and the anonymous female athlete admit that there is a divide in the Village: those who are considered the elite of the elite and abstain from drugs, alcohol or sex while at the Olympics, and those who do not. Then again, when condoms, and all the other amenities in the Village, are free for the athletes, it would be hard for anyone to resist the urge to party and have sex.
The ultimate commonality between the demigod-like Olympians and
university students is the universal understanding of the need for
discretion. Just like students understand that it is a bad idea to
blatantly have evidence, like photos, laying around after a weekend of
partying, whether you are the legal age or not, Olympians follow a
similar code. After all, writes the anonymous author of The Secret
Olympics, “What happens in the village, stays in the village.”
