San Francisco - Embarcadero: The Slanted Door - Coconut Rice Pudding
The Coconut Rice Pudding at the Slanted Door, made with tamarind and caramelized rice.
The Slanted Door, anchoring the north-east corner of the Ferry Building marketplace, is Charles Phan's nationally-acclaimed Vietnamese restaurant. Phan first opened Slanted Door on Valencia in the Mission district in 1995 at a time when high-design, high-service Asian restaurants were non-existent. His pioneering style blends homestyle Vietnamese cooking with fresh, seasonal ingredients from small local farms and creative wine pairings in a modern setting. After an interim stint on the Emabarcadero, the Slanted Door opened in its current 175-seat location, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking San Francisco Bay, in 2004. Executive Pastry Chef Chucky Dugo oversees the dessert menu and Mark Ellenbogen is Wine Director.
Charles Phan, winner of the James Beard Award for Best Chef: California 2004 and nominee for the James Beard Award Outstanding Chef 2011, has built a mini-empire in the Bay Area. In addition to The Slanted Door, he runs three locations of Out the Door, offering a quicker take on Vietnamese street food; Heaven's Dog, offering organic Chinese comfort food and a late night bar; Wo Hing General Store; a distinct take on Cantonese street food i the Mission District; the Academy Café, offering high-speed slow food, and The Moss Room, offering fine dining, both at the Academy of Sciences; and a soon-to-be Creole restaurant at Pier 3.
