Bubble Gum Alley

I had never heard of nor imagined such a thing as San Luis Obispo's "bubble gum alley" until emdot posted a shot of it a while back. Right away i was both fascinated and a little bit grossed out. But definitely more fascinated than grossed out.

This weekend i made it up to San Luis Obispo and was lucky enough to get in on emdot's great (unofficial) "bubble gum alley tour."

In person it was really cool to see. But when i look at the macro shots i took, they look much more disgusting than they seemed at the time.

    happy chewing!

this is a "guess where" i could have guessed!

i'm just not so good when it's in LA.

lavannya - yeah - pretty cool huh? this is in San Luis Obispo, which is in the Central Coast region of California.

there is also one of these in Seattle.

moxiee - you've been? maybe i can put it in the "guess where california" group ;->

this wall has really propagated. i have a photo of it from jan 05 and it wasn't nearly has covered (and layered) as it is here.

i wonder if it periodically gets scraped or something. it seems like when i was little it was really very crusty.

really great shot, 7how7. somehow kinda spooky. :)

Well, I am glad that you were able to make it to San Luis on such a beautiful weekend (I live there too...and am emdot's sis). I wish I could say I am a fan of the alley but I really can't stand it. Too many germs.

oh c'mon bec! it strengthens your immune system. ;)

    9. Rabooka [deleted] (74 months ago | reply)

Ew yuck Mar! Looking on Flickr is good enough for me. Don't even think of taking your nephew there to stregthen his immune system.

      hah - nice.

b-sugar - totally true but totally great too.

thanks dishpants - now that you mention it, it does have something maybe a little ominous to it

hi Rabooka - it was a great weekend to see SLO for the first time. (between you and me - emdot likes to talk the immune system talk - but she looked a little queasy when i actually touched the wall)

      thanks shane...

    12. Rabooka [deleted] (73 months ago | reply)

Well, at least you didn't lick it :). I still can't believe you touched it though. I hope you used that anti-bacterial hand sanitizer after.

    13. 7-how-7 (73 months ago | reply)

i did, right after dinner. ;-)

actually Mar marched me over to "sanitizer alley" and made me touch the walls there right afterwards.

somehow i didn't get any shots of that...

I SAW YOU TAKING THIS PHOTO! Seriously. I even wondered if that was Marya standing by you (couldn't tell from behind) and I thought, "That's a cool angle. Wouldn't it be funny if it showed up on Flickr?"

I am so grooving right now.

      i love that - it's so flickr !

i had my first slo flickr experience the day i got into town. marya had sent me a link to this shot to show me the SLO farmers market - and then almost right away i saw the guy with the sign on the left and thought - wait - this guy looks familiar.

It wasn't until a few days later that i met yardsale, the guy with the sign on the right.

So, were the other people there with you two, or just hovering nearby?
I hope you enjoyed your stay in our little town. Glad you got to encounter the local celebs. :-)

This place is interesting and creepy at the same time. Every time I walk through it, I shutter a little.

    18. 7-how-7 (73 months ago | reply)

Somebody's - those other folks just happened by at the same time. i did enjoy my stay - and by local celebs do you mean both emdot and the alley?

fishlamp - by "shutter a little" do you mean you have to take a photo each time ? ;-)

    19. fishlamp [deleted] (73 months ago | reply)

I'm glad you caught that, because that's exactly how I meant it.
      :)

By local celebs I meant Emdot and Yardsale, with the special added bonus sighting of Jesus-sign-guy thrown in.

Haha, I remember going through this alley when I was a kid. I used to stick my gum on there whenever I went by. I still live nearby, actually. I loved it, and I still think it's a fun idea! Your picture makes it look almost glamorous. It's a great shot, it makes me wanna go there right now!
