Yes, it is superb. But don't tell our council it is old, they will flatten the building! Great photograph!

Thanks Gary S! I promise I'll keep it a secret.

Too late.
This house (along with its neighbour) were proposed as additions to the 'List of Buildings of Local Architectural and Historic Interest' in Walsall in 2005/6 - description below...
***
Pair of Georgian townhouses, converted to shops later C19. Three storeys in red brick. First floor windows have good Regency lintels and modern ‘imitation sash’ wooden windows. No. 238 also has a stone cornice, absent from next door, which may be slightly later in date. The matching shop fronts are good, and are probably mid-Victorian. They are divided by an unusual corbel in the form of a man’s bearded face, this may or may not relate to the original trade of the shop. No. 236 has the added feature of a 1940s or 50s hand painted advertisement hoarding for ‘Orantips tea’ on its side elevation, including a picture of ‘Little Miss Barber’, who says ‘always ask for Orantips’. No. 238 is of local and national historic importance as the home of one of the ‘Walsall Anarchists’, who scandalised Victorian society. It is marked by a blue plaque.

Ooh, thanks for all the info, Scoobymoo.
I do hope it is/was listed - although even that is never a guarantee that it will survive.
The scandalous 'Walsall Anarchists' sound intriguing.

I’m currently pulling together the Food & Drink section of the Ghost Signs archive and would love to include this sign. Please add to the ghostsigns pool if you’d like to help establish the archive and support the History of Advertising Trust charity.
Thanks,
Sam

I got very confused ghostsigns! I thought it was already in the pool, but I've checked and it was in the 'Ghost Signs' group, and not the 'ghostsigns' one. I shall add it now.

Thank you for adding this picture to the ghostsigns group. I hope you will continue your support by returning this signed form to the History of Advertising Trust (HAT). More information can be found here.

I'll check that out ghostsigns.
Also, I think you might have invited another photograph of mine that got lost down my 'recent activity' list during a busy period. If you can remind me of it, I will happily add it too.

Blimey, that takes me back! Is that round Caldmore way? As a kid in the 50s Mom regularly took me to her mother's, and the bus passed this sign. There was a little row of shops set back from the line of the houses (and the sign was on the side of the last house on the right??) Can't find my way round the map, or Google maps now with all the new buildings. Must ask her if she knows it's still there. We moved to the area (slightly posher bit!) in '69. I used to joke to my hippy mates that, while I never achieved nirvana, I lived in Caldmore for many years. (It's pronounced karma, believe it or not: geddit?!)

Thanks for your comment, Kasper Veste. I'm not familiar with Walsall at all - this picture was taken on my only visit there! - but I've tried to place this picture on a map as best I can.
If you look under 'Additional Information' up on the right of this page, and click on the small blue 'map' link you can check it out.
Great joke btw!

I spotted it on the map when I was locating a few snaps of the Arboretum (worth a visit I you ever go back, btw), and then forgot to check back!
Dr Johnson was a regular visitor to Walsall, as it was the nearest place to Lichfield he could catch the coach to London. As he might have said, the only good thing to come out of there is the A5!
