19th Century Sampler

    more photos

A quilt I made by hand as a gift for Prof P. These are 4" squares of vintage 19th century fabrics and some reproductions of 19th cenury designs. I chose to use only dark and light tones of blues and browns and attempted to evenly distribute the colors over the entire quilt. The squares are latticed with plain muslin; the back is a contemporary wide beige paisley.

This was an absolute thrill to make! The fabrics are to die for and getting to revisit each one while patchworking, then while handquilting, and again while binding made me smile.

I love how this looks--the lattice really lets each individual fabrics stand out.

I can't tell for sure, but it looks like you shadow quilted the lattice but not in the colored squares? That makes the colored fabrics "pop" even more.

I think I have a similar fabric to the brown that is in the middle bottom of the picture. Fabric like that is hard to cut when the lines on the fabric aren't quite straight or are slightly off grain.

      Thanks, everyone!

I quilted around each square twice: 0.25" outside of each square and in the seamline around each square.
