Stick to the paths

I did a dumb thing - while walking in the Alpe Di Siusi, it was getting a bit late. Instead of walking back the way I had hiked up, I decided to cut straight down a hill, as a shortcut. How hard could it be. It was only a finger's width on the map.

There were no paths and the sloping nature of the meadow wasn't great for orientation. But scarily for me - I encountered several areas that were boggy; walking across them you could actually feel the water underneath and the ground all around was waving and rippling while gingerly taking steps forward. It felt like one slight misstep and I'd break through the 'thin fabric'.

Eventually, did make it back to a road, but through someone's backyard in a private area. Felt thoroughly guilty, and lesson learned - paths exist for a reason.

This was the one slightly interesting view along the way down. It felt like a nicely planned picnic spot and was the only autumnal tree I saw of this type in the area. A good reminder.
