the trumpeters are now returning to the island - in large numbers....this female and her mate arrived recently, with five very healthy looking cygnets in tow

bulking up

at this time of the year, black bears work hard at fattening themselves up for winter by gorging on spawning salmon...this one strolled out of the bush directly across from where i was standing on a streambank....he spent a bit of time checking things out, then he just plunged right into the stream, pulled out a big old salmon and ambled off back into the bush....

shaggy morsels

can't let autumn slip by without posting a mushroom....we've had our fall rains, so they're showing off their caps everywhere now...this one is called 'shaggy mane' and it's edible
