"Psssst. Psssst. Come play soccer with us. Just ten minutes?" How can you say no to this? Especially when the people asking are four preteens wearing grins the sizes of the fresh watermelon you had for breakfast? You can't. So five gringos broke a sweat and lost a game of fútbol. The victors were kind enough to take this photo with us, amidst a lot of teasing in mixes of Spanish and Quichua. By this point, we are all very used to being identified as gringos in Ecuador, but this time it was different. This time, the word gringo had a curious and playful tone to it, with no judgement behind it. This time, it was just big kids playing soccer with bigger kids, and the most notable thing about the bigger kids wasn't their light skin, but the fact that they were not the athletes they had once been.
