A Maltese ship owner did not want to pay for pier charges of Lorient harbor during the storm. He ordered his cargo ship to moor in Groix strait (between Groix island, sheltering from south west winds, and the coast) while waiting for improved weather. The anchors did not hold or chains broke. Pushed by wind and high swell, the ship crashed between Gâvres and Quiberon on the beach of Erdeven. The fuel began immediately to spread. Limited pollution, they say ... No, because it could have been avoided if the recommendations of the commission, following the sinking of the Erika, would have been applied. Limited pollution? Tell this to the oyster farmers of the Etel maritime River, whose sea fields are spoiled with fuel, 10 days before Christmas. One year of work trashed. They say you cannot oblige a ship to stay in harbor, "the captain is the only master on board". The captain, the only master on board? Lies! Decision was made by ship owners! Why in their office of “La Valetta” can they have the right to decide? Local harbor authorities know much better the dangers and the fragility of our coast.
