Hoopoe puts in an appearance

We've been hearing them since early April with their 'Hoop-hoop' call but it's been a couple of years since they came to forage in our front garden. They're one of the most visually stunning of our summer visitors. Their long bills are superbly adapted for insect larvae - this character spent half an our cleaning out the leatherjackets (crane fly larvae) from the lawn before a passing tractor scared him him off.

in our front garden here in Burgundy. They do get as far as the UK - you should google the distribution, not sur about E anglia but def the SouthWest. This is what the RSPB says.
