Coves, Caves and Cliffs

Coves, Caves and Cliffs

The view from 2.5 mile Old Landing Cove Trail in Wilder Ranch State Park just north of Santa Cruz. It's a beautiful trail with coves, bluffs, and sea caves. If you view the large version, you can see harbor seals resting on the rocks in the middle of the photo.

Itchy Head

Itchy Head

A wild elepahnt seal scratches her head at Ano Nuevo State Park. She was very pregnant and about to give birth.

The trail to see the elephant seal colony is a relatively flat 3 miles round trip. However some sand dunes need to be scaled near the colony. From December through March, reservations are required to go on this guided hike.

I took this photo with a 100mm lens. Although visitors can get as close as 25 feet to the seals, longer lenses are highly recommended on this trip. . Our group passed so close to a couple elephant seals it made my heart race.
