In Memory 9-11 and Katrina
We got MANY MANY honks today! Corner of Camelback and 24th Street, Phoenix, Arizona. This was next to the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, where President Bush stays at often when he is in town. We figured about 1 out of 3 cars honked, and some honked loud and long...

How long were you out there?
suertudo (82 months ago | reply)

cobalt123 (82 months ago | reply)
We were out there about an hour and 20 minutes. You can't imagine the number of honks we got, maybe two or three hundred! I only got the "salute" twice and one person yelling, but soooo many people were hollering "YES!" and people coming out of the Ritz-Carlton were about 80% appreciative and came up to say so! I'll never forget the wide range of age groups and the types of folks that personally came by to comment favorably. One common comment was "We are so glad you are doing this! You are doing the right thing!"
As for what does this do? A good protest will cause reaction, in whatever way it comes. Getting people to react and voice their opinions is a good thang. In this day, we were proud to be American, celebrating the memorial of 9-11 in action. Instead of sitting at home and cursing the darkness, we were out there and it was marvelous.

I agree 100% with the message of the photo! He's got us involved in an unwinnable & unnecessary war, has run the deficit sky-high, & helped to bungle the Katrina crisis! He's basically running the country into the ground IMHO.
By the way, are we still looking for Osama Bin Laden or is Pres. Bush having too much fun feeding our troops into the black hole that Iraq has become.
It was Osama who knocked down the World Trade Centers, not Sadam!
Where is Osama?
The way he & his military advisors handled the invasion of Afganistan after 9/11 was brilliant - a job really well done! Then he blew it, ended the momentum to catch Osama by leading us into an unthought-out war in Iraq that was either a personal grudge against Sadam or a chance to fatten the wallets of some of his buddies.
What a shame. He could have been a President we all were proud of!

forrestcook (82 months ago | reply)
::shrugs:: voice your opinion all you want, I just think a written argument detailing your views and published in a local paper would do a lot more to educate people around you of your exact views on the issue. Honking seems to only serve to adding noise pollution to the area and confuse drivers.
Natashalatrasha (82 months ago | reply)
I was so thrilled to see you and imagine my surprise to come home and see it on flickr...Yah...! we have momentum now even in Phoenix.
Ps Honk again
cobalt123 (82 months ago | reply)
Well apparently this simple sign and act has struck a chord among many people. If it were not resonating, then it would have been lost in the flickr shuffle of thousands of images. Thanks for those that comment and fav and add the notes - even those who are not impressed or even of opposite opinion.
I have no doubt that staying at home and crafting a letter to the Arizona Republic would have done nothing at all, and surely would not ever be published. This IS Arizona, after all. But for once, I felt my views were in the mainstream, as taking an action proved today.
Left-Coast-Right (82 months ago | reply)
Cobalt123, I'm glad you went out today and exercised your right to free speech (I really am). However, please don't confuse a high ranking on Flickr with a "resonating" message. It should be clear to anyone watching the Interestingness rankings lately, that almost any anti-Bush image will rise to the top, no matter how lame. The rankings reward traffic and comments, and both of those things are driven by controversy as much as anything. I’ve helped you with two comments, and your stunt didn’t resonate (positively) with me at all.
What this and other recent images do show, I believe, is that people feel strongly about President Bush. I also suspect that folks are rather frustrated with all levels of government right now. As a conservative living in a in a liberal city and participating in a fairly liberal community here on Flickr, it doesn’t surprise me that you got people to honk. Honking is easy. Getting people to actually vote is hard.
emdot (82 months ago | reply)
I'd like to respectfully disagree with L-C-R. The left has been relatively quiet for the last six or seven years. We have been much too polite.
Three cheers for making noise. Even if it's just to show solidarity and to be able to express frustration for a split second. To do so in a conservative town such as Phoenix must have felt great.

I'm Canadian and we have bad gov't here too. When Bush started the war in Iraq to 'liberate' it and I saw the bombs falling on Baghdad, I said to myself, I hope he doesn't come to 'liberate' us - better the devil we know.. Sounds silly, thinking that way, but ya never know how fast a war can start and for what ahem reason. After all, we have some oil/gas, some water/ice bergs, some teepees, and Canada didn't join in to help fight the war in Iraq and etc .. (big sigh)
Oh - HONK HONK HONK !!!
forrestcook (82 months ago | reply)
::grins:: I love that honking is making a difference now. It'll be so easy next time I want to make a difference about something, all I have to do is walk out to my truck and honk the horn.
I'm sorry cobalt if I seem to be attacking you personally, I just really can't grasp what honking does to make a difference. express frustration, sure. Test out your horn, fine. but make a difference?
I suppose I am assuming you meant to make a difference in the grand scheme of things, like troops pulling out of Iraq earlier or the bodies being picked up in New Orleans faster (which honking your horn certainly can't accomplish). Maybe all you wanted was to let people have a little release. Fine then, that I will concede.

HONK HONK HONK!!!!! LOVE it!!!
I want to get out my magic markers and get my own signs going!
I just got back from TX and was warned by my conservative sis not to "be Bush-bashing" while I was there...turns out I didn't need to because at least 75% of the people I discussed him with did NOT like him, did NOT vote for him, and many said, quite defensively that he was an "import" to TX...and an embarrassment. My poor sis was far out-numbered, much to her chagrin!
I am so proud of you for going out and making some noise and letting everyone know how you feel. We still have that right intact...for now! Some naysayers are claiming you accomplished nothing...I say bull-feces! You got THEM to respond...isn't that something? I wonder if they think their own opinion isn't worth anything? As for "confusing drivers" as forrestcook seems to be concerned about...puh-lease!!! If a driver is so inept that he or she can't put the clues together——people with big signs...the repeated honk of car horns——without becoming confused to the point of distraction (I assume that was the point) then perhaps they shouldn't drive...driving requires quick and conclusive thinking...period. I have never driven past a demonstration and found myself confused by the situation, for crying out loud! As for posting it here on Flickr...I think your photo images are quite telling of the events of our days...some people make careers of just that—photographing the events going on in this world. I think it is far more important, socially, certainly globally, than anything I photographed today. I would venture to guess that is true of many of us. Take forrestcooks photostream, for example (since he offered the query on what your photo accomplished here on Flickr); he posted images of classic cars...certainly one could argue that those cars contribute to air pollution, traffic congestion, etc...one could even wonder what posting them here even accomplished, no? But that isn't even the point. I believe it is your decision, and yours alone, what pictures you take and post on Flickr...is it not???
pmsandvodka (82 months ago | reply)
BTW...I find it amusing that "Left-Coast-Right" is so concerned about things here on Flickr...considering he/she doesn't even have any photos here to speak of! hehehehehehe
bc anna (82 months ago | reply)
Maybe it will convince him that he's not popular with many, even in an area considered to be a Bush stronghold.
Every little bit helps.
Honking is a good demonstration of the peoples' feelings.
Demonstrations helped stop the Vietnam war.
The honkers were heard.
May there be many, many more signs and honking messages sent. HONK!

Anti-government propaganda could be interpretted as an act of terrorism. Are you a terrorist?! I'm calling the Homeland security hotline on you!! Stay where you are!
cobalt123 (82 months ago | reply)
Ok, I'll stay. I'll be easy to spot: I'm still holding that sign...
pmsandvodka (82 months ago | reply)
LOL@ cobalt...
And skinny, you are probably right...but I will go down screaming about my right to Freedom of Speech...unless I get hauled to Guantanamo after they Supreme Court takes it away....
Besides, the real terrorists are in the White House...well, when they aren't on 5 week vacations, and who knows where...if ruling by fear, which is exactly what they do, isn't terrorism I'll eat my hat. There have been no "terror-alerts" (at least none broadcast where I could hear them) since that election...until now, when bush feels like he might be losing control...NOW we have terror alerts...hmmm....somethings smells fishy in Washington!

I came here to congratulate you on your #1 in "Interestingness" too, but Mim beat me to it.
Since I'm here, however, I'd like to suggest that you delete the comment from Erio, "HOOOOOOO... I hate george W. Bush ..." The lack of spaces in "HOOO" has screwed up the formatting of the page and made it almost impossible to read many of the comments.
I think the fact that this made #1 in Interestingness can be taken as an addition to all those honks!
