Tulugaq in the distance

Tulugaq in the distance

Noatak, Alaska, Jan 11th. We heard so much noise off in the cold, foggy distance here. We asked an elder walking by what the noise was and she said, "Tulugaq." Raven in Iñupiaq. She explained that someone had probably left food for them and they were congregating there to eat it.

My heart is still there a little.

It was about -45 F, maybe colder, when I took this. It was around noon.

Nunachiak

Nunachiak

Shipping containers in the village of Buckland, or Nunachiak, in the NW Arctic region of Alaska (Nunaqatigiich). I liked how flat Buckland is, and how in the dark, the tundra beyond the houses looks like ocean. I also liked how friendly and generous people were. Here, the light is flat because of the the cold, cloudy sky filled with--is it clouds or ice fog? I'm not sure. It was about -35 F when I took this pic.

Washeteria

Washeteria

My colleague, Janie, and the Village Washeteria in the Nunaqatigiich (NW) region of Alaska during the few hours of sunlight. In some rural Alaskan villages, washeterias supply washing machines, showers, and fresh drinking water (and are the only source for drinking water). In Buckland/Nunachiak, they have running water in many places, so the washeteria seemed to be primarily for laundry.

Alapaa!

Alapaa!

Alapaa! It was cold in Noatak (an Iñupiaq village in the Nunaqatigiich or NW region of Alaska), about -45 F when I took this photo. I loved being able to see the cold fog amidst the small trees. This is a pic taken on my phone--I am so excited to get my film back tomorrow of my pix of Buckland, Kotzebue and Noatak. We were so enjoying the kindness of the people we were meeting and the beauty out there that none of us were quite ready to come back to Anchorage, though I was eager to drop off my film.

Alapaa means "it's cold!" in Iñupiaq.
