Your tax dollars at work #2

Regular viewers of my photostream may remember a photo that I took of the FEMA trailer staging area near Purvis, Mississippi. These are unused trailers that were staged to this location following Hurricane Katrina (which hit land August 29, 2005). They are still there. I haven't taken the time yet to try to get a better estimate of how many trailers are there.

This is a photo of that same site taken from a Cessna 182 about 6500 feet above it. The photo was taken from the northeast. The distance of the highway from the upper left to just below the bottom of this photo is about 3/4 of a mile.

This photo is three photos stitched together using Canon's PhotoStitch software.

I bet that was hard keeping the camera steady!

I remember the other photo. Sigh. Wonder how far that would have gone toward, say, universal health care, or toward the next big storm?

jcj: It was fairly difficult. It was a bit windy, so we were bumping around just a little. It would certainly have been easier at a lower altitude.

Martin: I've had some people tell me that they are actually staged there with the intention of deploying them for the next big hurricane. I guess maybe that's true, but I'm still not sure that makes sense either. The last hurricane to hit the Mississippi Gulf Coast and cause anywhere near this kind of damage was Camille in 1969. Travel trailers require a fair amount of maintenance and care, I'm not sure that stockpiling them is a good solution.

Very nice. Before long, they'll probably be dumping them as decayed and unsuitable like the MRE's.

Hey Roger, I don't live far from this location now and driving by my wife paid attention to the odometer and it is 9/10's of a mile on the interstate
