Surprise View Millstones
These partly carved millstones which can be found dotted around the peak district poignantly display the demise of the millstone quarrying industry. The millstones were carved in-situ at the quarry and carted down by mules. These are the millstones that were in production at the point where the flour mills were replaced with modern processes.

In 1771, Richard Arkwright built what could be described as the first ever factory at Cromford Mills in the Derwent Valley.
